MemberI'm not an expert
but have you tried"Easy Newsletter Signups"
timothyw
MemberThe process went smoothly enough, the framework had an activate button. But the genesis sample did not have an activate button but I installed it. So the site looked pretty much as it did before so I a m unsure it actually 'took'.
Where do I look or how do I ascertain I'm now running 'clean' theme files?
Really, I spent a lot of time downloading and editing, and I it all purged.
Thankyou for your patience and support.timothyw
MemberThanks! I'll give it a try!

MemberThanks let me study this.
My first reaction,
(after gratitude) is I'm not clear how to identify all the wordpress files.
the WordPress files. The sad part is I actually did the original setups, but haven't touched the sites for two years and forgot a lot of what I learned doing it.
I do however remember struggling with the database setup.
thanks again for the resources!

MemberI renamed plugins to pluginHOLD
Didn't helpThere was no themes folder so I created one. Then I was able to upload and install a WP theme as a test, then upoaded & installed the Genesis.zip
Renamed pluginsHOLD to plugins.
But at tie point all the plugins are deactivated.
Some things are a little off, like no header background color, but the page displaysSo I guess it's case closed for this episode.
thanks for the ideas

MemberThanks for offering assistance and encouragement!
I think I understand the renaming the plug-in folder and creation of the new folder, but an unclear about the rest of your advise.
Can you explain further? I am technically challenged!timothyw

MemberFrom my own brief research: you typically use a plugin with the theme of your choice, some examples:
blog subscription (jetpack)
contact form 7
membershipdepends on what you are trying to accomplish
For my sites I want to force visitors to sign up once for free admission henceforth
This does not look like wht that site is doing.I like 'mad mimi'
hope this helps

MemberHi
If I am not mistaken those are all full width with combinations of header-content-sidebar; header-sidebar-content, etc.
I understand how these work on a page by page basis, and can also be controlled from a html editor.
I was asking about the layout where the page is framed in the center of the screen with blank space around itBest

MemberI also found widget logic which did it
i have bookmarked the resource you so kindly recommendedtimothyw
MemberI moved onto the next crisis.
Thanks for following uptimothyw
MemberThere were some issues with widget and the embed code into the form
but mad mimi has the features required!
they also have a widget designed for madmimi specifically
they are a google company
They have really good tech support.
i wound up deactivating the enews extended widgetInstead I put their mildly modified code into a new WP page.
I had to wake up long enough to explore the advanced webform settings on the madmimi site
There are some interesting options I hadn't even thought of but will think about using.
for now the landing page is an article I did for a client,
but I will instead make a gallery of clickable thumbnails which open slideshows, video and other content and links later.
very rejuvenating I can circulate the URL now.
This is great check it out. I'll delete your email of you ask. You're helping me beta

MemberIf I hit the limit, i'll be out of what we refer to as "negative equity" and I will be able to pay!
And thanks for the set up guide.
Yesterday my site was in a "forwarding loop" until I deactivated the membership plugin!
Thanks a lot Brad

MemberI'm not ready to sign up with mailchimp or other service requiring a monthly payment.
Maybe in a month or two but not yet.
So when I get to this sentence in the installation notes with enews, I come t a hault
"Using the mailing list contact form code provided by your vendor,"
Thanks

MemberIs this what you are looking for?
It is free.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/membership/if you google "WP membership plugin" there are other ones
I'm in the process of figuring out how to deploy it. I activated it without studying the documentation and my site was giving redirect errors when I tried to open it, so I disables it for now
Hope this helps

MemberThere seems to be a registration function built into WP.
Settings>General>Membership
It uses the meta widget in the primary sidebar. But as usual, I am having problems!
First it doesn't seem to inhibit entry onto the site.
maybe I need to have a menu page as the static landing page.Secondly there are too many fields in the meta form.
it doesn't look rightFinally there is a stop spammers plugin which I am having problems getting going, but until problem #1 and #2 are resolved, it is hard to test.

Memberwhat plugin did you use for access control to the site?
timothyw
MemberThis site's content is free,
My only dividend is obtaining email address of visitors so for that reason I want them to sign in.
It would be preferred if the email addresses are at least valid, but at this point not imperative.
Passwords will not be required since contnet is free, and might frighten visitors.

I tried a plugin called 'membership' and another called 'WP-members' but am unable to get them configured yet to where they work at all.timothyw
Memberok
so my theme doesn't have a landing template.
Also I want visitors to have to sign-up first then sign-in when they return.Rather than a newsletter I want to notify those on my list that new content has been added.
I do not envision so many members that I can't manage the list and reminders myself without needing mailchimp or one of those services.
I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel; maybe what I am describing is what everyone else does
My landing page will have a sign-up and a sign-in button and about info relating to the site's mission and content.
after enrolling or signing in the menu page opens with the menu of content -
