    Hi

Any recommendations for implementing a logon to my website?
I want them to enroll so I can harvest email addresses for my forthcoming newsletter.
I guess I need a landing page then once the valid email address has been submitted, open a menu of the site content available for view.

I see numerous possible plugins available for this function,
but wanted to benefit from the expertise and experience of you forum folks
    and avoid wasting time.

    Thanks!

    I'll check it out.
You're a rockstar rocket scientist at this,
A lot of your stuff is way over my head.
    though I'm slowly learning

    thanks

    ok

so my theme doesn't have a landing template.
Also I want visitors to have to sign-up first then sign-in when they return.

Rather than a newsletter I want to notify those on my list that new content has been added.
I do not envision so many members that I can't manage the list and reminders myself without needing mailchimp or one of those services.
I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel; maybe what I am describing is what everyone else does
My landing page will have a sign-up and a sign-in button and about info relating to the site's mission and content.
after enrolling or signing in the menu page opens with the menu of content

    Sign in for what?

Do you want to restrict access to the content?

    This site's content is free,

My only dividend is obtaining email address of visitors so for that reason I want them to sign in.

It would be preferred if the email addresses are at least valid, but at this point not imperative.

Passwords will not be required since contnet is free, and might frighten visitors.

I tried a plugin called 'membership' and another called 'WP-members' but am unable to get them configured yet to where they work at all.

There seems to be a registration function built into WP.

    Settings>General>Membership
It uses the meta widget in the primary sidebar.

But as usual, I am having problems!

First it doesn't seem to inhibit entry onto the site.
maybe I need to have a menu page as the static landing page.

Secondly there are too many fields in the meta form.
    it doesn't look right

Finally there is a stop spammers plugin which I am having problems getting going, but until problem #1 and #2 are resolved, it is hard to test.

    Thanks in advance!
