Well I try to learn from my own mistakes and tracking the resolutions of other people's problems on this forum
I will watch to learn how it is resolved.
You should be able to contact the author directly.
Or post the details of the crash and the error message,
Many forum followers are extremely knowledgeable and might feel challenged to jump in.
Here's my contact widget
my sight is a work in progress and I am new to WP and Genesis so do not judge me too harshlyhttp://www.securitytechmaster.com

timothywMemberGenerally plugins are uploaded to the wordpress dashboard > plugins.
But you can also download the compressed file to your local machine and then upload it into WordPress
like you did with the Studiopress framework and sample theme.I am unfamiliar with your environment,
so this info may not answer your question,
Sorry just saw you were dealing with something I have used so wanted to share info
better to go over to WordPress forum or the plugin's webpage for detailed support.I use Genesis Sample Theme but am hosted by Hostgator. I was able to upload and activate the plugin without any issues.
Hope this helps a little good luck
timothywMemberGlad it worked out for you.
timothywMemberWhen I purchased the framework and Genesis theme, first I downloaded them from My Studiopress to my PC.
I already had a WP account set up and had been trying out free WP themes already.
So I then opened my WordPress > dashboard > themes and uploaded both the framework, then the sample. Then activated the sample to use for editing the theme. You do not do anything with the framework except it there in the Theme gallery. The files you download from Studiopress are already zipped.
WP does the unzipping on your site.
Try doing that way, leaving out the extra compression step and I bet it will work.I did however unzip them on my PC so I could use them with Instant WP which allows you to simulate the WP environment on you PC rather than edit and work on a live site.
I hope I understood your question and that my suggestion helps.
timothywMemberThanks for replying
What specific files have to be downloaded. I understand the database and the theme files, but am unsure about the specific names of the other files and their location. Like style.css , functions.php.
And the media library?Thanks
timothywMemberHi
You edit the sample theme and leave the framework alone.
I hope this is correct, and if it isn't somebody advise.
timothywMemberI'm really not qualified to render help, as I am just learning, and on this forum looking for answers myself
but.....
Go back to My Studiopress and look for theme setup tutorial.
Or Google for Genesis Sample theme setup.
or try '2create a website' she's great. The easy way to insert a header is dashboard>customize>header.
You have to play with it.Or you can open your webpage, hover over the header area on the page and right click. Chrome will let you 'inspect element'
other browsers like Firefox has firebug feature, and IE has a tool too.move your pointer over the code bottom left of screen until the area on the page highlights the area you want to change.
This will tell you where in the stylesheet.css file you need to go.You open the stylesheet from appearance>edit
you can also search this forum using Genesis Sample Theme for your search, and find lots of posts addressing similar questions
I hope this helps and I will monitor this thread and hope to learn more from other more qualified and knowledgeable participants!Best
timothywMemberGreat ideas.
I'll let you know wha happens!timothywMemberThankyou for the thoughtful and thorough response.
I will explore your many suggestions.I am familiar with Firebug and the Chrome and IE equivalents of it.
I have something called InstantWP on my PC as well for sandboxing.
As you suggest, I am concerned that by the time I launch the site, I will have tweaked the code so much that it is not viable for further development.
Starting over is an option, but I keep recalling the challenge getting the database going presented me, and not wanting to deliberately going through that again!
Wanting to get the demo going was to serve as a learning tool. Help me to understand what the heck is going on! Apparently I'm not alone in this quest or the only one experiencing difficulties.
Part of the original scope of this site was to sell training and issue completion certificates from the site.
That introduces a lot of complexity to the project, and would probably require I hire a developer. But i think I will instead do my training on Udemy which runs separately, and simplifies the design and set up of my site.
Still a big challenge, but i think attainable to get by (with a little help from my friends)
I have monthly writing & media projects which begin to monopolize my time as my deadline approaches, (like this week), so I stop obsessing on the site to do those to pay my rent.
Of course the goal fore my site will be to also create revenue.
Thanks for your interest and tech support. I have a couple of questions I put out to the forum last night.
I'll keep you updated.
timothywMemberAll the videos run fine.
on my 24 flatscreen everything is in view without scrolling
on my Vaio laptop (17") the video is slightly out of view and minor scrolling is requiredit opened initially on my Galaxy S5 and didn't look that good, but the video scaled down and could be viewed vertically and horizontally.
I left the site and then was unable to open it again.
might be some issue with my phone.Great looking site!
Hope this helps!timothywMemberthe intro played fine on my IE11
timothywMemberHi Leif:
this is what i was trying to describe about the blank area. in this case the whitespace is green
timothywMemberI'm going to respond to your questions below. Let me mention that I did this on top of the website I have been sandboxing for a few months. I asked studiopress if I should archive my existing css.style and functions.php and reinstall the framework and sample theme and was told it would not be necessary.
my site is not hopeless, but I still do not have a strong enough understanding of WP so I wanted to try installing them dismantling the demo theme. For the most part your sample theme should match the demo. Any text widgets will have to be manually populated along with the eNews and Social Icons widgets.
I'm not sure I understand this process
You may also have to use you own pic for the first post.
I have lots of media files and pages already
Did you use the WordPress Importer plugin to import the xml?
yes
The xml file contains the posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags from the demo. If the imported xml file can be uninstalled,
I wouldn’t know how to do it. You have to go to each of those sections in WordPress and bulk delete them.
Or create a new database and install WP + Gen all over again.Once the xml file is imported, check your posts, categories, tags, and pages to see if everything is there.
I'll take a look I do not know what those items are exactly so it is hard to verify if they are all present
Then make sure the plugins used in the sample theme are installed and activated. From there, it’s just a matter of going down the tutorial and completing the steps.
I definitely have the plugins
Not sure what you mean about whitespace on the demo page.
when you view the themes in appearance>Themes, they are should in a row, or rows, and the page container is smaller than the whole frame. My pages extend out to the edge of the screen and are not within a container. I am having trouble articulating!
The sample theme, under ‘Reading Settings’ or ‘Static Front Page’ in the theme Customizer, is set to ‘Front Page displays: Latest Posts’. So if you are trying to edit the Page named ‘Home’ you won’t see anything (unless you’ve put something there). Maybe that’s what you are seeing? There’s more about this in the Codex
I will work with what you've suggested and see if I am able to gain a better understanding of what is going on! thanks for your thoughtful and thorough responses!
timothywMemberthanks for replying.
is the page supposed to look like the demo after importing the xml?
Then disassemble it item by item to better understand how it works
mine didn't.
is there a way to uninstall the xml?
where are the contents of the xml?
when I imported there was a list but it is gone?also did part 2 of my question make any sense?
Thanks again.
timothywMemberI fixed it, by cleaning out all the comments. I bet it was a missing bracket.
but made copies of the two files anyway.Thankyou Davinger for all of your patient support
timothywMemberI'd like to see the responses too.
timothywMemberStudiopress has instructions on how to replicate the general look of the demo using the sample.xml, but to be honest, I do not understand the steps.
Now you say this:
"You can replicate exact official demo look by importing this file into WP Dashboard."
Can you explain so I might possibly be able to understand. Thanks
timothywMemberThanks so much. Your suggestion will enable me to acquire more essential knowledge of WP.
I haven't explored this link yet, but the next question is how to position the widget. Thanks again I know many others will benefit from your info besides me
timothywMemberMaybe this is what you want?
http://my.studiopress.com/tutorials/install-genesis-child-theme/
hope this helpsI logged on to find out how to backup my current Sample theme css and php so I can start over!
Good Luck!
