I figured it out

in text mode, by placing "<!--nextpage-->" at the end of a page in the edit page screen

you get....

challenges in installation environments such as wireless communications and special applications such as biometrics.

at the bottom of the displayed pages

The (edit) is there because i opened the site using wp-admin

I had been trying to insert the "<!--nextpage-->" in visual mode which won't work.

I see your posts and receive your emails and it is almost as though we are acquainted!

You certainly generate a large volume of valuable support and information.
At this point I am still learning for my own site and have not graduated to doing sites for others.

re my question:

I may not be explaining or expressing what I'm trying to achieve properly:

If a page's content is so long that it is necessary for the visitor to scroll down,
instead I want be able to place a 'next page' icon at the bottoms of each page so the visitor clicks to advance to the next page.
I did not see anything I could identify on the snippets that did that.

I do not use posts nor are the pages organised in any chronological order.

I also have file manager. I thought if that after posting.

rename the existing functions.php and upload a fresh copy?
delete the bad one (optional)?
Do the symptoms indicate the problem is limited to the function.php?

I'll try those code snippets right now.

Even though the new template was not crashing my pages,

applying it showed no affects to my pages' appearance
so I was scrambling to figure out what to do next.

I think enrolling into a WP course is pretty much mandatory for me if I am ever to be able to walk erect.

I am at the point where I altered the attribute for my slider page to the custom template, and it opens.

Yeah the framing and timing is frustrating.
There is this WOW slider that I was going to take for a test drive, but you got to load the images and program it locally then upload it so you can't make changes easily.

The old slider was the free meta slider and is still there
