I've been experimenting with my site (making changes to css and php) and now would like to
either reinstall a clean sample Genesis theme or try others, but retain my media, content files and plugins etc.
so I can reuse some or all with the new unaltered theme

I've at least learned to clearly annotate every change I make to both Style and Functions, so I can find my way back to the clean code.

Not exactly a backup, which to me would be a set of files I could use if my site got disabled some how.
I have a test subdomain, does that serve the purpose?

    thanks

You can activate a default WordPress theme, and retain all your content and media etc. Then, delete the child theme you are using, and the Genesis framework, and then reinstall.

An interesting side note; We've been experimenting with 'child of child' for Genesis themes for quickly switching themes but keeping things. So far there are some pros and some cons, but if we reach a final conclusion we'll post.
