If the site is a blog, then use the blog as the home page. If it is a website with another function that contains a blog, then use an index page.

Regardless, I would install the Yoast SEO WordPress plugin, and fill out all of the meta information, including for the advanced information. The unpaid version has a simpler layout, or you can turn on the advanced layout to provide more information.

Search engines are pretty advanced. Since their inception of blogs in the early 00s, search engine bots understand that sidebars are not duplicate content.

It is OK to use Categories in the navigation menu.

Also, the Yoast SEO WordPress plugin uses structured data: https://yoast.com/structured-data-schema-ultimate-guide/

By the time you optimize the images, use only the plugins you need, and then add the site to a CDN, you'll be mostly there.

The design of the button will be based on your theme. But MailChimp along with plugins like Genesis eNews extended, or form code placed in a text widget or an HTML widget, etc., will allow you to add a sign up form. The JetPack plugin form emails you the sign up, but doesn't add it to a list automatically.

MailChimp, etc., will add the sign up to a list. You can use MailChimp code either from their website after you create an account. Or via a MailChimp plugin. Either way, you need a MailChimp account + list to which that information goes.

If you use JetPack, then you can manually add the email information to a list. MailChimp is better, because then people can "double opt-in". Once at signup, next, to confirm signup. This give you legitimacy as a "not spammer".

There are other Mail sign up sites available. MailChimp is just one product.

Here is one way to do this. https://www.sumydesigns.com/2015/08/19/how-to-use-genesis-enews-extended-for-your-mailchimp-e-mail-list/

Are you using code or just the file name?

    I.e., xyzpicture.jpg or Podcast name

The latter will ensure it shows.

    Greetings:

    Try this: http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-add-and-use-widgets-in-wordpress/

WP Beginner also has WordPress tutorials on their YouTube channel.

    Also: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Widgets

You can also search on YouTube for examples. Those links should get you started.

I noticed today that Google PageSpeed renders it correctly. I wonder if the bad rendering on vertical is an iPhone / Safari bug?
