You can't have only part of the site be responsive.

Andrea RennickMemberChoose the default layout in the Genesis Settings.
Use the plugin settings for areas you wish to show differently.

Andrea RennickMemberThe pictures that are used in the admin area have no relation to how the theme looks when activated. Some themes have a screenshot of how it looks. Those two do not.
They are just branding images.

Andrea RennickMemberWhen I set up the blog page, even though I tell it to only pull from category: -blog, it pulls all posts. Not a big deal as having the events on the blog page works out. The problem is now I want to create an events page, where every time a post is made for an event (in the category – events)
On the Genesis settings page to exclude a category from the blog posts page fill in the CATEGORY ID.
This is a number, not a name.

Andrea RennickMemberbit confused as basically saying i dont want to buy a theme but want to create a site from scratch. if this is a case is genesis still best rather than creating it from basic wordpress?
Basic WordPress still needs an activate theme. You cannot have a WordPress site with no theme.

Andrea RennickMemberOther sites I have set up using free WordPress themes failed #2 and #3 but the Genesis Sample theme fails #1, #2, and #3.
Those tests have nothing to do with your theme. they are looking at core WP files and refer to server hardening.
Nothing on that list is theme related.
On top of that, being able to *see* the directory listings in a folder have nothing to do with actually being able to edit those files.
Everyone with a WordPress install has the exact same files on their server. The code is public. Hackers can go read the publicly available and readable code to try and hack.

Andrea RennickMemberIt's not an update - it is a separate new theme.
Your site is already mobile responsive.

Change the settings to fit the widget area.

Andrea RennickMemberThis is a question for his host.
Unless he wants to see the stuff they upload inside his WordPress install, it's got nothing to do with WordPress.

Andrea RennickMemberYour posts are going into moderation because of multiple links and you're a new poster. Then I clear them out so they show all at once.

Andrea RennickMemberGoogle Universal Analytics ( 2.1.1 )
Greg’s Threaded Comment Numbering ( 1.5.2 )You do no tneed either of these. Genesi has a scirpts box to place the GA code in.
WordPress does threaded comments out of the box.
