November 27, 2022 at 11:12 am in reply to: Forum Dead and Useless. Genesis outdated? Is it time to jump ship ? #506252devParticipant
It has been eight months or so since I've been here and I am sad to see the demise of this forum and Genesis itself. I'm wondering what direction Studio or WPEngine (or whomever is in charge!) is going to take.
While I took the business and my personal sites off of WP and re-wrote them with Bootstrap as static sites, we still do WP sites for clients... but my developers want to use the open source version of Astra and GeneratePress instead and so we have been gravitating in that direction.
What is the outlook of Genesis? We've been using it for a decade. Has WPEngine/Studio issued a "roadmap" for the future of the product?
devParticipantHow time flies. I wonder if this issue has been fixed by Studio Press?
This summer was an unusually slow time for us so I decided to take some of our websites off of WordPress and re-write them as static with just HTML, Bootstrap (and some jQuery bundled with Bootstrap.)
It was a lot easier than I thought it would be but I would never suggest it for a client unless they knew how to use an SFTP program (we use Transmit on the Mac) and knows a bit of HTML... and had the time for the learning-curve.
The only "more difficult" part was in creating the gallery
(see radioqsl dot com/bs/gallery.php) In the Bootstrap/PHP world there is code "out there" for anything you want to do... as well as a zillion HTML templates. You never have to start with a blank screen! It is nice to get out of WP-update-hell, the plugin-incompatibility-nightmare, and GutenBUG. 🙂 I also have no need to learn (or have the bloat of) FSE which is the NBT (next big thing) coming down the WP highway.
Here are some of the static sites we did this summer if you are interested in seeing the code (I use "dot com" notation here so people don't think I'm advertising):
radioqsl dot com
newmediawebsitedesign dot com
k6aai dot net
angelpup dot com
newmedialite dot com
newmediaecom dot com
acwritings dot comI run my own server on Linode (for business and personal... not for clients... we put them on pair.com) and I'm bringing up a new server with the new Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and moving a static Bootstrap site is way faster and easier than moving a WP site and database!
BTW, what is the status of Genesis these days? I've been out of this loop for the past six months or so.
devParticipantSo how did you do it?
Anyway, I hear people saying that it looks like Genesis is on the verge of no longer being supported and is at EOL... and so we are looking for another 'standard' to build with. I'm hearing people mention Astra and Generate Press but have not had the time to investigate either.
Actually, for our biz model most of of our sites can be done as static with Bootstrap along with some Lightbox code.
The big issue is that we MUST have a picture gallery, like Foo. Well there is a ton of code out there that does a nice gallery in HTML and CSS and Javascript.
Look at this code to see how easy it is to do a pix gallery. We really don't need Foo or Guten (this is just a proof-of-concept site for a HTML/Javascript gallery): https://k6anc.net/light/
Our tech-clueless clients don't make many changes to their WP sites and most often ask us to do it. WP is just kind of 'overkill' in many instances with our customer base. (NewMediaCreate dot com ... I don't want to advertise here so there is no 'hot' link.)
With so many new coding solutions... React, JamStack, Vue, and "the framework of the day 🙂 ) a lot of people are looking at faster, less overhead solutions than the traditional heavy-weight PHP server-code with database model. We'll see where it goes.
Thanks.
devParticipantIt was a PITA but I was able to get the picture up there via some CSS as I noted above.
Now the only problem I have is that when I scroll the home page and the site-title changes from white on black to black on white, when I hover over it, it now turns white!! I can't find the class with the "hover when scrolled" CSS to set the color to black and not white after scroll.
I set the Chrome Inspector to "hover" but so far I can't find where the color changes. It works fine for the menu items but not site title.
If you have an idea on where to look please let me know.
devParticipantYou're right. When i test the image block on a standard page it displays but when i set that page as the posts page, it doesn't.
Do you know if this is just on Infinity or on all Studio Press themes?
Do you know of anyone at S.P. I should contact? You've been here for many, many years!
Thanks.
devParticipantif your theme is fully supported for blocks.
Infinity has been around for many, many years and it has been updated with the block editor... but obviously not completely. I'm glad it was 'free' to me since I bought a life-license to Studio Press about 10 years ago. I surely would not pay for it now.
We like to build out client sites with the Genesis middleware for it's security and strength. Not once in the ten years we've been in business has a Genesis site ever crashed after a WP update (like they did when we used Elegant themes just starting out.)
I liked the Studio Press philosophy of employing a theme for just "look and feel" while functionality is provided by plugins. But it looks like the developer-world is moving away from that given the huge popularity of all-in-in themes like "7" and "X" and Arvada.
Al
NewMediaCreate dot comdevParticipantI finally figured out how to get this done since it looks like Infinity's blog page is not totally in sync with Gutenburg.
See: https://sundaygospeltalk.com/wp/postings/
First I created a 'sticky' post with no title and nothing on it except the picture of the pen. It was 'post-124'
I then added the following CSS to get rid of the meta data and some of the padding to move the pix up higher next to the blog-page title (Postings).
.post-124 p.entry-meta { display: none; } .post-124 p.entry-permalink { display: none; } .post-124 .entry-header { display: none; } .archive-description, .author-box, .breadcrumb { border-bottom: 1px solid #ffffff; margin-bottom: 0px; }
If there is a better way to do it, I'd love to see it.
devParticipantThere was no html generated. See for yourself:
https://sundaygospeltalk.com/wp/postings/
You can see how I put an image block on the blog page with a pix of a Pen in it... but it does not show on the site!
What did I do wrong?
Thanks!
January 11, 2018 at 10:12 am in reply to: Adding Google font: Is using header scripts area ok? #215300devParticipantThe link above will work, but for Genesis I've had success doing it with this code for a style sheets and fonts:
//* Load the custom CSS file add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', 'custom_load_custom_style_sheet' ); function custom_load_custom_style_sheet() { wp_enqueue_style( 'custom-stylesheet', CHILD_URL . '/custom.css', array(), PARENT_THEME_VERSION ); }
//* For Lato font, as an example add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', 'sp_load_google_fonts' ); function sp_load_google_fonts() { wp_enqueue_style( 'google-font-lato', '//fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lato:300,700', array(), CHILD_THEME_VERSION ); }
That said, I'm not sure that using the Header Scripts box for a low-volume site to add a font or a style sheet will be so much LESS efficient than PHP code, such that it would make a difference in load time.
YMMV.
Thanks.
January 10, 2018 at 4:21 pm in reply to: Adding Google font: Is using header scripts area ok? #215288devParticipantGood advice and I thank you. The issue is that I have to explain over the phone how to add a Google font to a company site she is not allowed to give me access to. Trying to explain to a newbie how to deal with PHP on functions.php is a bit more involved than telling her to "put the Google Font link in the Gen. Header Script box."
What is the advantage of enqueuing the script vs. using the header box?
devParticipantThank you. I should have spent time looking at the Genesis functions.
This works in functions.php
add_action('get_header', 'child_remove_genesis_do_nav'); function child_remove_genesis_do_nav() { if (is_front_page()) { remove_action('genesis_after_header', 'genesis_do_nav'); } }
I'd have never figured this out without your help. Thank you again.
devParticipantThat makes huge sense.
I looked at many, many examples on sites run by so-called WP experts and no one mentioned the above with respect to the conditionals. All I saw was the direct code popped in functions.php.
So given that I'm now on the right path, do I want to create an action pegged to a WP hook or a Genesis hook? Can you suggest one to use... maybe a code snip to save me a bit of time searching?
Thanks.
devParticipantYes, I know that Dave's reply works... however the problem is that it also deactivates the "more" link on the page and that's not good! I could hang a class on the more link in the WP 'text' editor and use the CSS to keep that link active while the the entire featured page is deactivated link-wise. But one day she will create a featured page to put in that widget area and will not understand how to do a <span class="keep-link"> [More] </span> construct.
There must be a better way to do this... I'm working on it.
devParticipant@Victor: Thanks for the help but the code didn't work. I was hoping it would. If you have any other ideas I'll be happy to try them.
April 5, 2017 at 12:01 pm in reply to: Seeking simple shopping cart theme for "pro bono" client site #204342devParticipantWe put up a proof-of-concept site using Dynamik Web Builder (DWB) and WooCom at...
... and tried it with the Genesis Connect plugin and without and it worked better with it. I think that some themes have baked in the connect code.
Somewhere there must be a really good Genesis child theme designed specifically for Woo but I've not found it yet. I have not done a big search either since using the DWB and one of their free 'skins' I pretty much have what I want/need in a bare-bones e-com site that we can replicate for (paying) clients in a short period of time... pretty much out of the box (i.e. no major time-consuming customizations that 'kill' profitability.)
February 26, 2017 at 12:18 pm in reply to: Seeking simple shopping cart theme for "pro bono" client site #202010devParticipantYou still need WooCommerce, but you won't need Genesis Connect any longer.
Thank you Victor. I was hoping someone would explain it to me.
You know, I never understood what the Genesis Woo Plugin actually did, but it always worked!
I may use this "skin" of Dynamik Web Builder (DWB) (https://cobaltapps.com/downloads/dynamik-website-builder/) which is a Genesis child theme that we have a developer license for and have had great success with over the years. Between this and our license for Studio Press themes we don't buy too many 3rd party themes anymore. We used to by 75 to 100 a year... now maybe 5 or 6... usually for special sectors like restaurants, churches, etc. We've are not comfortable with the pay-yearly paradigm that all the vendors have moved to, but that's another story altogether.
This DWB skin may work as a somewhat bare-bones, free website, store.
http://cobaltstaging.com/storefront/
I'm looking for something simple that is all built-out for me (or mostly built out.)
If anyone has other suggestions (we'll pay a reasonable fee) do post here.
Thanks again. This continues to be a wonderfully helpful community and it is nice to be back.
February 26, 2017 at 9:24 am in reply to: Seeking simple shopping cart theme for "pro bono" client site #201992devParticipantOK, thank you. I will look at the new(er) themes. With Woo support coded into the theme do we still need the Woo plugin as well as the separate Genesis plugin or are they both included in these new themes. (I've been away from the Genesis community for about a year doing simple(er) and cheap(er) Bootstrap sites http://newmediacreate.com/lim/ but am happy to get back to doing WP sites again.)
February 26, 2017 at 12:17 am in reply to: Seeking simple shopping cart theme for "pro bono" client site #201975devParticipantI plan to use Genesis since we have a developer license for it as well as the themes.
What does Studio Press mean when they say that they have included WooCommerce into their themes. Or did they put it in the framework? To the best of my knowledge Woo has always worked with SP themes. What is different (or "better" ) now?
February 25, 2017 at 6:27 pm in reply to: Seeking simple shopping cart theme for "pro bono" client site #201964devParticipantThe newest ones were just updated to include WooCommerce support out of the box for Studio Press sites. They are ready to go.
What do you mean "WooCommerce support." The few shopping carts I've put in always worked with Woo's plugin along with some special plugin for Gen. What has changed?
Thanks.
October 3, 2016 at 10:57 am in reply to: Is there an exhaustive list of Genesis theme vendors out there? #194170devParticipantThanks, Susan. We can work with that list... or perhaps just put up a link to it on our site. We want to give our victims (oops, I mean clients) as wide a possible choice of theme vendors from which to pick from subject to our approval, of course.... and our standards are simple... vendor theme must be responsive so we don't have to code a lot of CSS media queries and we look for themes with code that makes the site accessible to those with disabilities.
