I would add some code to the template to change the excerpt length:

if you aren't already using excerpts.

Then, I would add a custom body class (for easier styling, and making it easier to add more categories later):

And then, using the new body class we added I would use CSS to change the image size, and tweak you design.

Try changing the width of your header widget area so that all of your menu items stay on 1 line. Then change the site-tagline in extender media queries to:

}
