ParticipantRavidreams found what you are looking for, if I'm understanding correctly.
Since you want the blog page to automatically use the beginning of your content, you need to do as she says. In your screen shot you have "display post excerpts" selected. I think in that very drop down box what you are wanting is "display post content." If you pick that, you'll see an option to limit the number of characters displayed appear under the drop down.
Since you are not wanting to use Excerpts - which is the place where you type exactly what you want on the blog page - you need to pick the "content" option. A limit isn't really applicable to actual Excerpts since those are a whole separate field you enter. Kinda weird terminology when you think about it . . . .
Does that help?

ParticipantDo you have Excerpts and Featured Images showing in your Edit Post (or Add) screen? If you do, you can add them when you add a post or edit a post.
If those two boxes aren't showing, click the Screen Options button at the top right of Add/Edit Posts and you can see if both those are checked. You will need them to have check marks. When they are checked, you'll find boxes to type in exactly the Excerpt you want and to add your Featured Image.
Does that help?

ParticipantThanks Anitac. I found it and clicked "Join!" Thank you - hope it grows!
Does anyone else miss the ability to quote previous posts? Can't bbPress do that?

That's great news about the LinkedIn group - what is the name? I've actually been really hoping that a LinkedIn group would grow out of this support change!
As for these forums, I can see some things that I like better and I do think the split to deal with those things like "I can't download my child theme" in a different way was probably necessary/smart. However, the old forums obviously got a got more attention for customization issues and I'm going to miss that a lot!

ParticipantI'll take this a step farther and say that it would be really helpful if we could come up with a list somewhere of exactly what needs to be changed on every genesis child them (or at least the responsive ones) in order to successfully change the width. Maybe we'd have to give a relevant range of sizes? It seems like I never have a project that this doesn't come up and it would be a resource we ought to be able to compile all in one place - here or somewhere.

Have a look at Backup Buddy by iThemes.com. If you are going to be developing sites and then moving them, it really is the fastest and easiest way. It's not a free plugin, but it's really a time saver. In addition to giving you a great backup solution, it also has a handy site migration tool you can use to do exactly what you are asking about.
Good luck!

ParticipantSoZo - thanks for the clarification on what to do where. I was kind of afraid that was the answer, but I appreciate your being upfront about it.
While I share the concern that the support system is now only for a much, much narrower set of issues and will exclude the vast majority of things I've asked about in the past, I'm certainly willing to hope for the best and give these forums a try. Frankly, I often thought the theme-specific forum structure was helpful some of the time but not always. For example, sometimes I am searching for a way to change a small thing on a specific theme. Other times, I know about what I want to accomplish and I'm trying to figure out which theme to start with or to copy from. While I can see that for experts, maybe all the themes are coded similarly - to me they are very much not!
For that reason, I can see having general forums (like Design Tips) and making use of categories or tags for the specific themes being really great after we all get the hang of them. After all, we are all WordPress people, so that seems like it would work. However, I have to admit to a question about that. It's an embarrassing one so it has taken me a couple of days to make myself ask it . . . . Where are the tags? I must be the only person that doesn't see them, but I don't. I'm looking for something like a tag cloud - but cooler, of course. How do I find tags to click on - say for Executive or Agency? I don't find tags displayed anywhere except on the top of a specific post. That doesn't really help much with searching or browsing - especially not if it's intended as the replacement mechanism for the individual forums. If there would be a way to expose those tags for people to see on some of the more "main" pages that would, I think, relieve some of the stress.
I know nothing about bbPress (that's what this is, right?) but can you make it really obvious that you should choose the tag for your theme(s) when we write up our questions? I would think that would really help some people that are searching and also people that might answer a question. I know I would only consider answering very basic questions on a couple of themes - even though I own the whole package I only use a couple.
And thanks to all the moderators for putting up with what's got to be an avalanche of questions and comments . . . .

Thanks for that explanation. What I'm sort of hearing is that technical support is handled in the ticket system and customizations are handled here. Is that right? If it is, I'll bet I'm not alone in wondering how to determine which a particular question is? What exactly are the differences? Maybe that is spelled out somewhere and I just haven't seen it but if it is not, writing that up might help everyone?
The other thing I'm reading into your answer is that customizations are not going to be handled by SP support staff anymore but are going to be here in the community forums? I'll be the first to admit I've been really blown away by the amount of customization help given by the forum moderators in the old system. . . it seemed too good to be true. However, of course, lots of us relied upon it a great deal and are understandably stressed by the prospect of change . . . . Am I reading your answer correctly that all customization questions will now be answered only by community members and not by the forum moderators?
Thank you.
