    Hi there

I am using the metric child theme and have added a blog.  How can I

    1) make the excerpt that shows on the "/blog/" page shorter (i.e. fewer words)

    2) display the featured image on each post.

At the moment the excerpt length is too long and no featured images show at all.

    Thanks!

    Brett

Do you have Excerpts and Featured Images showing in your Edit Post (or Add) screen?  If you do, you can add them when you add a post or edit a post.

If those two boxes aren't showing, click the Screen Options button at the top right of Add/Edit Posts and you can see if both those are checked.  You will need them to have check marks.  When they are checked, you'll find boxes to type in exactly the Excerpt you want and to add your Featured Image.

    Does that help?

Hi there. Thanks for that, but that's not what I am looking for. I want the /category/blog/ page to automatically have shorter excerpts than what is currently showing up, and I want the featured picture from the post to also show up on the blog category page.

I have the excerpt box showing, but I don't want to use that - I just want a shorter excerpt automatically

I have been adding featured images, but they are not showing up on the category/blog/  page.

I'm guessing I am going to have to mess with some php templates here, but just need some help with what to modify.

    Cheers,

    Brett

Oops - OK I just found the featured image setting in my control panel. I know I looked there before  😮

Just looking for how to modify the excerpt length now.

    Cheers,

    Brett

Check the "Content Archives" settings in your Genesis settings page at

    wp-admin/admin.php?page=genesis

Choose "Display post content" and you can limit character count there.

Thanks for that, but I don't see an option to limit character count... Here's a screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/XVDwoBoivUJ

I did find something that recommends changing something in functions.php, but if there's a "control panel" setting I'd rather do it that way.

    Cheers,

    Brett

Ravidreams found what you are looking for, if I'm understanding correctly.

Since you want the blog page to automatically use the beginning of your content, you need to do as she says.  In your screen shot you have  "display post excerpts" selected.  I think in that very drop down box what you are wanting is "display post content."  If you pick that, you'll see an option to limit the number of characters displayed appear under the drop down.

Since you are not wanting to use Excerpts - which is the place where you type exactly what you want on the blog page - you need to pick the "content" option.  A limit isn't really applicable to actual Excerpts since those are a whole separate field you enter.  Kinda weird terminology when you think about it . . . .

    Does that help?

A-ha! Now I get it. Thank you very much for your time everyone.
