For future people who read this, the code so kindly given, which I tweaked for this site (because the client wanted it exactly like the example) was:

If I take the Eleven 40 theme as an example, instead of the home page middle area being latest blog posts, convert it into a widget area instead - so I could put a slider in and use the featured post widget (as a start). Just really not sure how to do this with no widget area being defined for the home page - and then could apply the process to the other themes which have a similar setup - which is quite a lot of the new ones.
This comment is not meant to come across as nasty, but I am finding the new 'Pro' themes less suitable for static websites and designed more for the 'bloggers' post pages.
