Hello, I'm trying to fix my child theme so it'll be a full width theme while also staying responsive. However, doing so through custom CSS to override the width setting seems to mess up the child theme's responsive feature.

Directly editing the child theme's style.css file seems like a bad idea to me, because what if there's a child theme update? (1) Will that overwrite the child theme's style.css and undo what I just did? (2) Is there a way to insert custom CSS that will allow me to set full width while keeping the child theme responsive?

Child themes aren't automatically updated. It's rare for a Studio Press child theme to ever receive an update, and if one is updated, you wouldn't know about it anyway unless you logged into your account and viewed the available downloads. There are no notifications sent out. It is appropriate to directly edit style.css and functions.php. That's what a child theme is for. I just wouldn't edit these files through the WordPress editor. If you make a mistake, you'll crash the site. Edit these files through FTP to be safe.

Thanks. Will a child theme update overwrite style.css and functions.php after I have edited them?

I'd like an answer to Trekker's question as well. Does a child-theme update affect that child theme's style.css file?

There are no automatic updates for child themes, nor are there any notifications given at those rare times when a child theme is updated. The only way to know if a child theme is updated is to log into the download area and check the version number. If you find that a child theme has been updated and if you choose to apply the update, you have to update it manually. You would have to compare files to see what's changed and make sure your customization are copied over.
