The way comments are designed in Executive Pro, there's so much padding that it's impractical to have any real dialogue with my readers. How can I change this into something more blog-like?

Look in your theme's style.css file starting around 1434. You'll find css for comment-header, comment-content, and comment-reply. You can adjust the padding for these rules to your liking.
