I am using the Genesis sample theme as my child theme. It's clear blog layout suits my purpose. I notice that this child theme has a style.css and functions.php which is the same as the Genesis theme.

My question is can I remove the contained code to place my own since this child theme already inherits from it's parent?

    Thanks for any pointers

Child themes do not inherit CSS and functions.php from the parent. The child theme's CSS is independent of the parent and functions.php accesses hooks and theme supports from the parent. Both are necessary for a child theme.

Hi Victor Thank you for your reply. The source of confusion for me is that the sample theme is exactly the same in look to the genesis parent but it seems a to ship with a full style.css and functions.php file. Can I totally strip these out?

No. You can’t strip them out. The child theme won’t function without them.
