    I have spent a couple hours trying to get a background image into the
    header for the WP installation thegildedhour.com. The various Genesis plugins and theme
    customization screens -- which I experimented with endlessly -- didn't do
    I what I need. Custom css in the appropriate box also didn't work (I tried
    it with this tutorial:

    compare the site as it is now and then look at what I'm
    trying to achieve, here:

    Note: in the lower right you're seeing two widgets, one with the random quotation
    plugin, the other plain text.

    I may end up having to hire somebody to do this, but it really shouldn't be hard. I've done far more complicated things with other (less expensive) themes but at this point I've painted myself into a corner with Focus.

    If I understand you correctly, you want the image to be very light in the background so the text stands out. If that's so, you have to photoshop the image. If you add opacity to the site header to lighten the image, it will also be applied to all of the child elements within the header.
