    Does anyone have any idea why this doesn't work:

    add_action( 'genesis_before_post', 'genesis_shortcode' );
    function genesis_shortcode() {
    if ( is_category() ) {
    echo do_shortcode( '[table id=1 /]' );
    }
    }

    I want to use a shortcode to render a table in the description section of a category page. The output I am getting now is simply the typed text [table id=1 /]

    You will usually get that if the shortcode is not executing. The do_shortcode documentation says:

    If there are no shortcode tags defined, then the content will be returned without any filtering. This might cause issues if a plugin is disabled as its shortcode will still show up in the post or content.

    Are you sure tablepress is activated?

    Also, you are using Lifestyle Pro theme which is html5. genesis_before_post is an old pre-html5 hook. The correct hook for a pro theme is genesis_before_entry.
