Exclude Posts In Specific Categories From Displaying

Hi

I'm using RunWay Pro theme, and I pretend to exclude some featured posts In Specific Categories from displaying in the front page, without installing a plugin.
I took the below code from Brad Dalton (http://wpsites.net/web-design/exclude-category-posts-page/) and I pasted it (changing the category ID) on my functions.php.
But it is not working.

Runway Pro is a third party theme and not built by Studio Press. Unless someone who has access to that theme can answer your question, you best opportunity for receiving an answer is to contact the developer directly.
