I'm trying to find a way to change the color of the current menu item for the links propagated by WP Courseware plugin in the sidebar widget.

I understand that if I wanted to change the current menu item for the navigation menu, I would use ".current-menu-item a."

If I were to specify links for the current open page not in the navigation but in the sidebar widget propagated by plugin widgets (such as WP Courseware, Recent Posts, Featured Posts, etc) what code snippet would I be using/applying?

I am using Genesis Sample Theme.

I'm not aware of any available snippets that will accomplish this task. I believe this would require custom coding. Essentially, when an item is clicked in the sidebar, you would have to intercept the click and add a class to the link. That class world have the new color. It is possible to do it in PHP since the click would trigger a server request, but you could also do it with jQuery, which would probably be the easiest way to achieve your goal.. It would take a few hours of diving into code to write the snippet though. Maybe, this will at least get you pointed in a satisfactory direction.
