The answer yes no you cannot upgrade your theme from XHTML to HTML5 with out changing your style.css file. Open you your style.css file and look for the following codes.
And change the min-height: 120px; to maybe around 100px that should work...
.header-image #title, .header-image #title a, .header-image #title-area { display: block; float: left; min-height: 120px; overflow: hidden; text-indent: -9999px; }
