Thanks both for your advice. Sadly that code snippet didn't work at all for me: captions didn't appear on any featured images, and in addition it mucked around with my homepage: sidebar widgets started appearing in the 'home top' position.

Summer, you're right about that first post image being taken as the featured image, and captions do then appear; but it's not treated in the same way as a featured image, unfortunately. It places the heading before the image in each widget, rather than displaying content alongside the image (home top) or below (Home Middle Left). It also doesn't respect the image sizes set for the 'Show featured image' dropdown, so it's not possible to display one full width, for example.

Grrrr! What I want *seems* so simple in theory, but also so hard in practice!?

Thank you Andrea, that's really helpful, and it gets me closer to what I want, but...there's always more!

Looking at it further, I was using 'featured image' for each post, and captions don't appear for those (same in the demo), and not 'insert media' (where they do, with your proviso above).

I used featured images because it meant that the featured post widgets worked correctly, with h2 headings alongside the right size images (albeit without captions). However, I then found that the featured images weren't then appearing at all in single posts: I managed to fix that with a code snippet ( http://wpsites.net/web-design/display-featured-image-before-or-after-entry-title-on-single-posts-pages/ ) - though I'm not sure if that was the thing to do...and again, no captions.

My ideal is to be able to use featured images and captions with the widgets so the homepage looks right, and featured images and captions on the post pages. Am I barking up the wrong tree here? (I'm certainly confused!)
