Well, well.... Brad, It seems that Brian Gardner posted a different method of repositioning the primary navigation to the header by removing the site header widget area and replacing it with the primary navigation menu.
Perhaps that will work better than adding the "custom menu" widget to the "Header Right" widget area. Or do those two methods accomplish the same thing?
My goal is to have 1 navigation menu positioned to the right of the Site Title.
madhattieMemberActually, I'm not setting my menu for the primary menu position, nor for the secondary menu position. When I activated the custom menu widget in header right, the controlling css nav settings seem to be in the .genesis-nav-menu selectors instead of .nav-primary.
I did find the top-level hover control in the theme color css here:
.news-pro-blue .genesis-nav-menu a:hover {
color: #d9a861;
}Setting the menu hover color there did the trick. Now I just need to make the corresponding text color changes for the @media responsive css selectors.
madhattieMemberRecommendation for managing the functions.php file in your child theme:
Install and use the code snippets plugin:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/code-snippets/This simplified my customizations so that I can easily identify all my additions and changes, locate problems with conflicting code, etc. It keeps my functions.php file from becoming bloated. All the code entered via the code snippets plugin can be exported prior to a theme update so your customizations do not get lost.
You can get a better idea about how the plugin works here:
http://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/wordpress-code-snippets/madhattieMemberAlas, no url yet. I'm still in basic site design/development (installed locally on my computer).
However, I was able to add my small header background image (and have it repeat to fill the header) by modifying the CSS:
.site-header {
- to add this:
Background: url(http://mylocalsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/header-background-bt-01.png) repeat !important;[the url, of course, must be the exact address of the image]
So I was able to display the background in the header properly after all.
Thank you for your willingness to assist.
... Just thought I would now post my solution in case others might also need to know this.

The result on your site looks great!
madhattieMemberI just deleted any mention of a footer in the php or css. Now it messed up the overall format of my website. Do you know how I can fix it back to normal?
Oh dear.... That's why I keep a log of all my design changes. There's no easy "undo" button.
So far your site looks like it's coming together well. On first glance a couple of things jumped out at me and I'm pretty sure you've already slated them for tweaking.....
In the header the logo needs more white space around it. Maybe reduce the image size?
Davinder already mentioned the name signature needs work. It looks blurry on my screen.
I like your topics.

madhattieMemberCongratulations on a job well done! Very clean setup.
I especially like the Open Sans font you're using. Was that the default font with the theme?

madhattieMemberAndrea, could you please provide some info on how to make the required changes in the media query sections? Or point us to some available references on how to do so... ?
Thanks
