A bottle and a quarter of wine and two more hours of tinkering and I finally found the simple solution... I was editing in the Appearance > Editor area instead of using Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS.

For anyone else who may be confused, when going into Appearance > Editor by long-time habit, the note at the top says "...you CAN edit and live preview CSS changes in the built-in CSS editor. [emphasis added]" However, it doesn't say you MUST edit CSS via Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS.

Evidently that was he problem here. The edits I was doing were not catching, whereas they did once I used the built-in CSS editor under Customize. Had the note been clearer, I would have saved 2 hours and 364 liver cells and one FB rant. Next time I'll try that first.

In case this helps, I noticed that in the customizer viewing area it actually renders as I hoped it would and as one would think it should when only one Genesis Featured Page is in there (for the record, I tried it one Genesis Featured Post as well and got the same result). A screenshot of that (how I'd like it to render) is attached here from the customizer preview area, along with a screenshot of how it actually does look in several browsers, in case anyone takes a glance at the link while I'm tinkering with it myself.

    How it should look

    How it actually looks

Ah I see how that could be a work-around (albeit an awkward one), but it still doesn't resolve the question of how one might tweak the theme such that one Genesis Featured Posts widget dropped into one of those sections displays multiple featured posts horizontally as it does normally in other themes. In Cookd Pro, for example, you just drop the Genesis Featured Posts widget into Home Middle and set the number of posts to display at 4 and it renders 4 posts across. You don't have to drop in 4 featured posts widgets to do that. I think that's what both the original poster here and I are both trying to figure out how to make happen.

Did this question ever get resolved? Perhaps the flexible widgets tip went over my head, but I've also been struggling today to figure out how to manipulate this theme in order to add a featured posts widget to a few of the front page widget areas and have them display horizontally in sets of 3-6 instead of vertically in one column.

Thanks so much. I had to add in a second ">" after ".right" to the code you posted, but that was it and it worked perfectly. I also added bold, so I love the look now. Much appreciated!!
