Okay, I see what you're saying.

I went back and tried to add just the second half of the original code you provided and that worked for me. I had to adjust some things via CSS, but either way - thanks so much for your help!

    Thanks braddalton!

For the category template, I do not have an archive.php or category.php file in the parent folder (wp-content > theme > genesis). Would it still work if I just created a file with category.php name and place it in my child theme folder?

Thanks Victor! Though, I might be missing something in my theme. I added that to functions.php, but when I refreshed the site, it appeared to remove the padding of the main container. I'd provide a link to my site but right now it has a splash page while I work on the changes 'live'.

The footer div looks something like:

    <footer class="site-footer" itemscope="" itemtype="http://schema.org/WPFooter"><div class="wrap"><p>Copyright © 2015</p></div></footer>

So it looks like I already have a 1 column footer with the copyright info inside it right now. Currently, I do not see a spot to add widgets to my footer in my settings.
