Detroitwidget, I export the SQL and meticulously edit it in a text editor. And then import it to the blank database on the other site. Here is the main site and its replica:
http://www.keptlight.com (main site)
http://www.testbed.biz (replica)I have not seen any ill effects on the front end and on the Dashboard. Do you suggest a way to test the integrity of the import? I would love to be able to do that.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantHello Brad, I am writing to update my experience. I installed the widget import/export plugin you recommended. The export went fine, but the import failed with a message "Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons." Something, somewhere is protecting me too much! Luckily, there are not many widgets to worry about, I will manually replicate them. I thought you might want to know about the import issue.
Thank you for your help as usual.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantThank you Brad. The Import/Export was "far too visible" it blinded me!! I will give all these a try, starting with WP Migrate DB which sounds like a one stop shop. But very good to know about the Import/Export Widgets plugin.
Never too old to learn!
Thanks again,
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantThank you Brad, that is some help. But this is something I would like to do on a regular basis. I was hoping to export the DB, fix the folder name issue, restore it and be done. Does Genesis keep its settings and widgets elsewhere, outside the WordPress database? If it did, I would think it would be in a file residing in a folder all of which are replicated on the secondary site.
How would I export the Genesis settings? Is there a special command, a menu, or is it part of the export widget settings plugin?
Thank you, and have a Great Holiday Season.

ACEkinParticipantCathy, to close the loop and provide you and other possible readers with my solution I am writing this, here is the final setup:
http://www.nepcollective.com/I decided to install Meta Slider plugin along with its companion Meta Slider Lightbox. With a little CSS tweak I removed the margins from the Meta Slider and the result is a slide show that looks like the featured images of this theme yet displays a sequence of photographs. It also allows a class assignment to any slider, I created "full-width" class in Meta Slider advanced settings and added the following to the custom CSS:
.full-width {
margin: 0 -40px;
}Thank you for your help, encouragement, and staying with me.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantThanks again Cathy, I found my notes from the other site's development. Using Genesis Simple Edits plugin, I changed the Entry Meta above and below content tokens. And now they are merged. Your code above would probably have done the same in the functions file.
I appreciate your willingness to help and your knowledge. Thank you,
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantCathy, thank you very much for quickly offering help. Actually the sticky post solution was the first thing I tried. However, if the content length is set in Theme Settings, it shows only the featured image (if there is one) and prescribed number of characters of text, nothing else. A workaround is to manually add "More" breaks which works but requires a lot of manual intervention in all the posts.
I did a fair amount of programing, complex products but in a different language (and when I had more hair!) I can follow instructions and am very careful. I am comfortable with FTP, CSS, etc. A separate home page is not a solution for this client, he actually likes the stream of posts on the home page. If we cannot solve it by merging the widget areas or adding a separate widget area, I will look into a plugin solution. Quite a while ago I used a plugin I believe was called "Widget Entry". I am not sure if it is still around.
I do appreciate your help, thank you.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantThank you Brad, for confirming that my approach. I had to declare the width 100% to prevent it from sticking to the left edge. The second block is essentially to position the logo. I feel better! Thank you,
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantThank you Dave, we will look into this. There seems to be several other similar services. By the way, many many years ago when I was a child I remember reading a children's novel titled "Just David", thanks for reminding me of that.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantJust to close the loop, I have resolved the issue above. Here is my approach for anyone dealing with a similar situation:
- I decided not to use the first widget area and stuck with the second one
- I also bypassed the theme instructions and placed a text widget with the following code, note the divs and new classes added:
<div class="inwidget-left">
<h1>Be the Center of Attention and Demand Focus</h1>
Stopping eyeballs in their tracks is not easy. You need a design that demands focus, a story that generates impulse, and they must integrate seamlessly. Centric, built on HTML5 and mobile responsive, gives you all of it. So what do you want to do online? Sky's the limit.</div>
<div class="inwidget-right">IMge Link</div>
<div style="clear:both;"> </div>
<div style="text-align:center;"><Contact link>Contact Us - I added the following to the custom CSS:
/* As screen width narrows center and adjust the header elements */
.inwidget-left {
float: left;
max-width: 45%;
text-align: left;
}.inwidget-right {
float: right;
max-width: 45%;
text-align: left;
}
@media only screen and (max-width: 1023px) {
.home-widgets-2 .widget-area .inwidget-left, .home-widgets-2 .widget-area {
width: 100%;
float: none;
text-align: center;
}.home-widgets-2 .inwidget-left {
float: none;
max-width: 100%;
padding: 0;
text-align: center;
}.home-widgets-2 .inwidget-right {
float: none;
max-width: 100%;
padding: 0;
text-align: center;
}
}
There may have been more efficient way of handling the situation but this is the best I could do. One option that may be worth considering, and I am, is to put the H1 block outside the first div to it stays above both blocks.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantI have since moved the text widget to Home 2 position and the behavior is somewhat similar to what I want. I am still interested in learning how to change the behavior of Home 1 widget area.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantCarasmo, we are looking at alternatives and until I get the contract I did not want to spend too much time on this. So, it is on the shelf now, but your help is properly linked for me to find it at a moment's notice. Thank you.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantCarasmo, thank you very much for the detailed instructions, I will follow them on a new installation and let you know. This is one of the reasons for my wanting to stick with StudioPress themes. Much appreciated.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantThanks carasmo. I downloaded the plugin you mentioned but it seems to be not compatible with the latest version of WooCommerce, the plugin says it is OK up to 2.21 where the latest version of WooCommerce is 2.5.5. I guess I am better off looking at the options that have the support built in. By the way, the plugin indicated that I needed to add a line to the functions.php which I did, no luck. The plugin will not even activate even after the functions.php file is edited as it requested.
I appreciate your direction.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantWhen I move the prototype to the client's site I will follow that advice of image location, thank you. This has been a very valuable learning experience for me.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantThanks again Brad, I have finally figured it out 😉 and was even able to adjust the white header area as the screen got narrower. I am posting the CSS modifications I added for future reference, if there is a simpler way of doing this I would like to learn.
Thank you for your help again,
Cemal
This is the relevant segment of the CSS addition:
/* Add white header area which is modified in the media query below */
body {
background: #88bbdd url("http://manganlaw.testbed.biz/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/whitebg.jpg") scroll repeat-x left -96px;
}/* Add phone number on the header and put it to the right */
.site-header .widget-area {
width: 200px;
float: right;
}.site-header .widget {
text-align: right;
}/* As screen width narrows center the header elements and increase the white header area height */
@media only screen and (max-width: 1023px) {
.title-area, .site-header .widget-area {
width: 100%;
float: none;
text-align: center;
}.site-header .widget {
padding: 0;
text-align: center;
}body {
background: #8bd url("http://manganlaw.testbed.biz/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/whitebg.jpg") repeat-x scroll left -25px;
}
}ACEkinParticipantThank you Brad, I will give it a shot and let you know how it works. I appreciate the guidance.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantAll is well on my side as well. This should provide a nice short tutorial for anyone trying to change the width of the title and widget areas. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Tom.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantAh, good to know that it passed the real test. Thank you for all your help.
Cemal
ACEkinParticipantHello Tom, I am writing to report that the following snippet, inspired by your directions, seems to have resolved the issue. Of course I have not yet tested this on an actual iPhone 6+ but on a simulator online. Thank you,
Cemal
Note: I swapped the width for the two areas and added the widget-area class to the closing snippet to make that center on narrow screens, without it the icon was floating right and looking odd. When I hear from an actual iPhone 6+ user I will report once more.
.title-area {
float: left;
padding: 0;
width: 720px;
}.site-header .widget-area {
float: right;
width: 300px;
}
@media only screen and (max-width: 1023px) {
.title-area, .site-header .widget-area {
width: 100%;
}
