Hello!
I'm brand new to the forums (hi!) and am attempting to code my first theme from scratch. I'm also learning php at the same time, which probably sounds a little insane but this is the same way I learned HTML and CSS - I wanted to code my own page, and, so, I figured out how. I'm repeating the same process with this new theme.
... And I was doing okay until I started to work on the custom homepage. I'd like to have the homepage display multiple lists of posts, such as popular posts, some posts listed by category, etc etc, and so far I'm having a surprisingly difficult time getting this to work. So, now I'm wondering if I'm approaching this problem in the wrong way.
Should I just widget all of this out and then use standard a WordPress loop within the widgets to display the posts I want?
OR should I be breaking my back trying to figure out how to code the front-page.php to do this?
Overall, which of these options is a better practice or theme development? Especially for a theme I don't plan to distribute.
(So far I've been struggling to manually code the front-page.php to do this, and I have looked and looked and looked for a tutorial to do what I want and have come up empty-handed - or, at the very least, the tutorials I have found are not written in a way that I can't even begin understand what they're doing at my current expertise level. I don't mind researching, but a big block of code with no guidance what-so-ever is what I'm trying to avoid. I'd like to understand what the code is doing.)
Are you developing the theme for customers or yourself? If you're doing this for customers, ask yourself how much effort do you want to put into support. Moving away from the standard widget format and opting for custom code will require you to provide a much higher level of support. No matter how good you are at designing themes, your users will always want to make changes to tailor it to their particular tastes. Just Google and see how many times the question is asked about adding a sidebar to the No Sidebar theme. Such is the nature of theme development. Make as simple as possible for you since you have to support it.
