I downloaded the simple social icons plugin (great!), but when I use it in a widget for the modern portfolio theme the buttons cover the black lines that divide each widget.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or what? I was just going to get rid of the lines, but I haven't figured out how yet.

I removed the line, so if you view it you can not see it, but the line was through the social share buttons in the sidebar. You can see that the padding on that widget is less than the others.
