Why choose a particular theme?

I don't understand what I should be looking for when choosing a theme. I'm an end user (a tax lawyer), not a web designer.

Meaning, all of them look nice, and more importantly, if I'm going to spend hours and hours customizing a theme after it's installed, does it really make a whole lot of difference which theme I start with?

What am I not understanding?

Forget aesthetics for a moment. When choosing any software product, you have to consider the business processes you want it to support. As a tax attorney, you are probably interested in lead generation, client services and communication, audit support, debt settlement, etc..

If you consider WordPress as a car, the theme is the paint. It's the first thing people see about you and your firm. It has to be a reflection of your personal style and taste. It must be attractive enough to appeal to your prospects to make them want to learn more. In many cases, this is the first and only impression that they will have of you. Will the walk to the door, turn around and go home, or will the open the door and walk in to learn more? This is your store front, if you will.

You can probably find a theme that meets your aesthetic goals and perhaps some of the business process goals. But keep in mind that business processes are different for every business. I've done quite a few attorney sites, and no two have ever been the same when addressing business process. I have an estate planning attorney that uses WP Client to communicate with clients and exchange documents. That particular site has custom estate planning and probate calculators. You won't find anything like this out of the box.

Most of the customizations you'll make to a site apart from addressing business process are color tweaks, maybe adding a new widget area, or other aesthetic adjustments. This is just normal. If you move into a new office, you'll probably paint the walls, no? I know people that change color schemes every couple of months. If you are considering a Studio Press theme, you are choosing a theme that offers additional SEO benefits such as schema.org markup and accessibility right out of the box. You are buying a luxury theme. Choose based on functionality. Changing the look is the easy part.
