    functions.php is in the child theme directory. This is not something specific to SP themes. This is the way all WordPress themes work. You edit functions.php through FTP.

    Child theme are never updated automatically. If an updated child theme is ever released, the changes are generally minor. If you decide that the changes are compelling enough to update the child theme, you have to move your custom work manually. That's how all WordPress child themes work.

    There are different opinions on if Genesis Child Themes get updated. Yes, they are not automatically updated but there are some themes that are updated to include major changes which you'd need to be really careful implementing. For example, performing a Diff Check to see what the difference is between your current file and the updated file. You wouldn't be able to merely install an update as you could overwrite your customization.

    Lee Anthony of SEOThemes created this plugin called Genesis Code Snippets. It's in the Github repo and not the WordPress repo.

    Take a look at that to see if that will help you. Or you can create your own custom function file and custom CSS file.

    Strange SP doesn't have a plugin?

    Do you know why "Genesis Code Snippets" isn't in the WP repo? And will "Genesis Code Snippets" update once installed on a WP installation?

    Let me ask Lee. He may be out for holiday, but he shares that in other groups. I've never seen that message. But you can also create your own functions plugin using Andrea Whitmer's tutorial - https://www.nutsandboltsmedia.com/how-to-create-a-custom-functionality-plugin-and-why-you-need-one/ or using Bill Erickson's tutorial here - https://www.billerickson.net/core-functionality-plugin/.
