Installed Genesis 404 on Genesis/Prose site and it's not working.
Is there an easy way to change the error page without getting into the CSS?

You could try a custom 404.php page template http://wpsites.net/web-design/add-content-404-page-genesis/

It's a little tricky using PHP! The Genesis 404 plugin is a dream - just doesn't work with child themes.
I wouldn't mind adding CSS code to the custom folder but this is complicated! Thanks for the info: I might study it and learn how or delegate to a techie; if you know PHP it seems pretty easy.
