I want to update my sites css to take advantage of the newest features in 2.0.2, my site was originally built on Genesis 1.8.

The one thing I can't figure out is why using the standard 2.0.2 CSS creates a site with only 1 column on a 23 inch monitor. In other words, the sidebar is showing up below the main page.

    Here's my original site: http://fuelthebodywell.com/
Here's a copy with the only change being the CSS is replaced with the standard Genesis 2.0.2 CSS

Which theme is your original theme based on? And what are you using now?

the themes are the same except for the different css. The theme was created using a genesis sample theme for version 1.8.
it was described as "Custom two or three column child theme created for the Genesis Framework."

The 2.0 Sample Theme is totally different than the Sample Theme for 1.8. I think what you are confusing is the framework. You only needed to update the framework from 1.8 to 2.0 - not the child theme itself.

So are you saying that as long as the framework is updated, there is no benefit to updating the css of my child theme? That would be great if that's the case. I thought my child theme may have duplicate content.

You only need to update the framework. Child themes are never updated. The case is that they created one Sample theme back with the framework was version 1.8. When 2.0 came out, they created a new Sample theme which is HTML5. Your sample theme is not HTML5 so therefore you would only update the framework.

That is the update I want to make. I want my site to be HTML5. To do this I need to create/purchase a new child theme?

You don't have to purchase anything if you don't want too. Your theme can be converted to HTML5 or you can use the new HTML5 Sample theme and customize that to look like your original website. There are several things you need to do to convert your existing theme to be HTML5 compatible. If you are unfamiliar with the process and would like to contract that service - you can send me an email to assist you or you can select another developer to do it for you.
