My site revolves around images. And, I admit, I'm a little disappointed in WordPress' native control of images. Genesis, and Minimum, are great but they really add very little or nothing to image functionality other than mobile responsiveness.
I've tried the method of allowing WP to created thumbnail, medium and large versions of my images. I've also tried the method, of not allowing WP to do it, and uploading the sizes I need manually.
The main issue comes at the time to display them. Right now, the method that looks the cleanest is centering an image that's the same width of the main content column - 740px in Minimum (680px with a caption). But I don't want to post all my images big like that. If I use WP's feature of resizing images, then I can align an image to the right or left, but that means all my images, including the ones I'm posting big will be crunched for smaller, unused versions. Not to mention, that in Genesis, large captioned image (bigger than 560px or so) don't work with mobile responsiveness.
Then, I tried using WP's native gallery feature. That one just sucks. That's barely any control whatsoever of how to display the images.
Does anybody know of a good plugin for image management and display? Or maybe a CSS package for Genesis/Minimum that would add more display control of native images. I'm getting a little frustrated with the lack of image control in WP.

The top banner image is easy. That's how I do mine, but notice how the smaller images are displayed on the other parts of the article (click the side arrows at the bottom). Also, even the lightbox is mobile responsive. I'd like to take my images to that level. I'm close, but not quite there yet.

Hi @braddalton - Do you use it on any of your sites? Any good examples?
I'm testing the one without Jetpack right now - which uses the same module from the Automattic version. I like how it displays on the computer. On the iPhone, it looks good, unfortunately it's not intuitive to tell the user to swipe for the next image, as there are no arrows or anything.
Also, this only solves the mobile responsive display problem. But, the way the native gallery displays in my posts is still subpar. What controls the size of the thumbnails in the gallery? Is it the thumbnail size settings? CSS? I wish I had more control over how the gallery itself looks in my post.

You can easily change theme or add more custom sizes however WordPress produces an image for each size and by default everu image you upload gets converted to 4 images.
^^^ Is that really that bad? I hear people complain about this all the time, but I feel it's in the wrong context. People always complain about it saying that it increases their server space usage. While that is a valid point, server space is relatively cheap, I'm more concerned about the growth of the the database over time slowing the site down. WordPress keeps a tab on all those little images. Do you think this is something to worry about?
Not really but it makes backup take more time.
You can use the media settings for 3 images sizes plus the original which should be enough.
Hi @braddalton - I ended up installing the carousel without Jetpack plugin. I also found that if I set the WP native thumbnails to the same size as the Minimum thumbnails (330px), the size appears available in my posts. Making the galleries 2 columns with 330px looks pretty good with my layout.
