We're looking for the best, most professional looking and secure way to accept online donations using the outreach theme? The plugins we saw were not very impressive although we didn't look through all of them. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you looked at the WP Stripe plugin? It looks really nice and is made for donations: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-stripe/

You can add a custom menu to the header right widget area to display a menu to the right of the header.
