I'm redesigning my site. I have a test site I'm working in. I'm wanting to look at changing my front page. I thought that I could simply reset the static page (Settings/Reading) to a different page and I'd be able to see what that looks like. It's not working and I can't figure out why. Using Academy Pro child theme. Is there some setting I'm not aware of? OR?

I've flushed caches etc. Waited 24 hours..

One method is to create a front-page.php file in your child themes root directory and use the default Reading settings rather than a static single page.

Hmm.. what would that do to the functionality in Academy Pro for the front page? There are all sorts of widgets there not available on other pages.

You can't have both a static page and a widgetized front-page. If you're using the Academy Pro widgets, you are using the widgetized front page in the front-page.php template.

Using widgets means the front-page.php template takes precedent over static pages. This is the way WordPress works.

If you want to use a static page as the front page, don't use widgets.

Okay that's halfway helpful. So I have a front-page template it has the widgets on it.

WP tells me that the page I want to have be a Front Page is the front page. But it isn't displaying when I look at the site online. How/where do I change something to get the page I want to display as the front page?

Is the only way to do it to rewrite the page using Customizer to cut and paste? That seems unlikely.

Like I said, if you want to use a static front page. Don't use widgets. Delete all of your widgets and the static page will receive the priority. You can't have it both ways. WordPress doesn't work that way.

If you must have widgets on a static page, you have to create your own page template to support widgets. It doesn't make sense to me to do it that way, but some people do. There isn't anything that can be done on a static page that can't be done on a widgetized front page. There's no benefit to it.
