On Studiopress' wide themes, the .site-container size is 1140px. I know that size has something to do with common screen resolutions, but I don't totally understand the details.

Let's say I want to add a 15px padding to the current 1140px wide .site-container. Am I creating some problem for my users that I'm not aware of by increasing the .site-container size to 1170px?

You can make it any width you want, but you might have to rewrite a lot of css to adjust for width change; eg, sidebar, main, header and footer code. It depends on whether widths are set in pixels or percents. If percents, they will probably adjust fine.

    Thanks for the response pxforti.

If increase the .site-container size by 30px and then fill that increase with 30px of padding, the net effect is zero. So there should be no effect on the width of the sidebars, etc. Correct?

My real concern is whether going from 1140px to 1170px will cause certain screen sizes to scroll or something?

TeeTide, if 1170px is what you need, do it. There's no worry about horizontal scrolling here unless you remove the responsive features of the theme.

All you need to do is account for the new width in the response CSS section to make sure it continues to behave like it did pre-modification. I've widened themes before, and didn't have too much of a hard time after adjusting the sizing in the main content and sidebar sections.
