I'm having what seems to me to be an odd issue while customizing a child theme. I was working with a customized child of the "Pretty Creative" theme, and had a literal butterfingers moment in the "customizer" in my admin dashboard (on a local/development install of WP) and accidentally removed one of the widget areas, the "full width image" widget. Crap. I really needed that.

Some googling tells me to restore widgets in a situation like this I need to go into the database, except I didn't have a db backup to restore from. Doh.

Out of curiosity, I installed a fresh version of Pretty Creative on that same WP install, as well as on another test site I've got to see if I could just start from scratch and get my widget area back. In EVERY version of Pretty Creative I look at now...in the customizer, this one accidentally deleted widget area is ALWAYS gone. But it's there on the Widgets page in the admin area. Through the widgets area, if I put content in the "deleted" widget area ONLY, it doesn't show up on my static homepage. BUT, if I also put content in at least one other widget area...both will show up.

Can anyone tell me WHAT is going on here? Is there a way I can restore this widget area to how it originally was? Why is it showing up as missing from a brand new version of this theme on a different site? I'm working on DesktopServer, would there be some kind of database cross over here or..??? HALP!

I'm not sure what you are are asking. You can remove a widget from the front-end display in the customizer, but you can't delete it. To delete a widget, which is to permanently remove it from your theme, you have to edit functions.php and possibly front-page.php. This isn't possible from the customizer.

Widgets will not appear on a static home page. Widgets will display when you have the home page set to show posts and you have content populated in the widget. That's when front-page.php takes over. If you have a static home page, the widgetized front page is not used at all. You'll still have header and footer widgets, but content area widgets aren't even being accessed. If you want widgets on a static home page, you have to create a new page template for that particular page that renders the widgets.
