Hi, I have just installed the Balance theme and the problem being that the first post on the homepage (the featured post) displays in full. The rest of the posts are limited to 50 word excerpts which is great, but how to I get the first post to be an excerpt also?

Here is the demo with the exact thing I am looking to do -ย http://demo.studiopress.com/balance/

The post titled 'the undeniable act of mobile communication' is the excerpt length I am after. The rest of the excerpts on that demo page are set out like mine, so they are fine.

Does anyone know how to make this happen? In simpleton terms if possible.. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks!

    Hi,
I don't have the Balance theme, but I have a couple things you can look at.

Some Genesis child themes have very tricked-out homepages - that's the way nowadays. And some of them have loads of widgets that allow you to control that tricked-out-ness. Others require actual PHP coding to change things like that.

Balance, though, seems reasonably simple. I'd guess that you have a widget or two for the stuff beneath the header, but for the Post parts, I'm going to guess that you can control this with regular Genesis settings. Try this in admin:

Genesis.... Settings, and scroll down to Content Archives. I'll guess that it is set to "Display Post Content". If so, try changing it to "Display Post Excerpts", and see if that does it. This will also allow you to choose whether to display the Featured Image. If that fixes it, great. Keep in mind that this setting will affect other types of Archives on your site, but that may not even come into play.

That's my guess without having my hands on the controls. btw, apart from web coding, our interests seem to be remarkably similar. ๐Ÿ™‚

I see one thing on your site which looks a little sketchy.... the "online casino" thing at the very top. I hope you meant that to be there!

    Hi thanks for the reply.

I do have that option in the child theme but it's actually set to 'excerpt' not 'display post content' so that's obviously not the solution.

I have looked in every possible location and there simply isn't an option to copy what is being done on the demo. Surely though if it's in the demo, it should be an option in the child theme?

As for that online casino thing - it's been there ever since I signed up to WordPress and it's there with every theme I have tried - no idea why it's there or how to locate the actual link in the back end..

Right. Yes, one might expect to have a setting for it. Themes also come with a README in the download area, although I have found that these aren't usually all that great. Try official support, they can probably help.

Go into the post and edit it via the html tab - look along the top for the 'more' tag and click that where you want the except to end.

Either that or just add <!--more--> manually. For example, to cut the excerpt off at the end of the capital 'BLAHH'...

'blah blah blahhhhhhhh blah blah blaaaahhhhh
blaaaah blah blah blah blah blaaaaah BLAHH
    <!--more-->
    Blah bLahhh blaaahhh

    I hope that makes sense.
