    My client wants visitors to be able to fill out a Membership Form (also downloadable) in which they can select one of 5 levels of membership and pay the amount via PayPal. Then the visitor would receive a confirmation of payment, AND the client would receive notification that a member has joined and what membership level they selected.

    What functionality/plugin can I use to do this?

    If this is the only ecommerce type of transaction on the site, is the Content hosting plan enough? Or do they need to purchase the Commerce hosting plan?

    There are many membership plugins which provide the functionality you need:

    2. MemberPress
    3. Paid Memberships Pro

    Thank you Brad and Victor! I want it to be as simple as possible - and free. So I think it will be S2Member or Paid Memberships Pro. Because these plugins will integrate with a payment gateway, does the Client need to purchase a SSL Certificate for me to put in the footer of their site?

    Free. I would go for RCP if you want simple.

    WPEngine and websynthesis.com both offer 1 click installation of SSL certs.

    I've always supported S2 member but feel its too technical to recommend to beginners who want a simple plugin and you rely on community support for the free version.

    Thanks Brad. Restrict Content Pro costs $99/yr for the basic personal plan. Restrict Content is free. I hope it will suffice. Still not sure if I need a SSL certificate or not, for selecting and paying for a membership level. How is the SSL certificate added to the site? In the footer? In a widget? As you can see, I'm new to the ecommerce side of things.

    SSL is added on the server side. Adding it depends on your host. You can install it manually which is quite technical, or use a plugin.
