I have made an attempt to upload my own images for the background images in using parallax pro theme.

In the appearance preview, when I upload the images, they do not show up with the dark overlay that the default images have.

I thought this was controlled by CSS rules, but apparently it is not.

What suggestions do you have to make my images darkened like the default images so the text is legible when placed overtop of them?

Parallax Pro doesn't have any type of image overlay. Look in the images folder for the theme and you'll see the images themselves are dark. You can create a similar effect with Photoshop or other image editing software.
