    I would like to make a page template that works just like a category template would, using the page name as the category which it displays. Any suggestions? The main reason I don't want to just use a category is the pathing. I don't like having category in the path.

    Perhaps it would be easier to use categories and then remove the category base from the URL, as per these instructions:
