I have searched using Firebug and can not locate:

1. Reduce the area at the very top above the header area. ie move the whole page area up. (still need this part)

2. Make the main nav less tall ( got this part)

height: 40px;

.genesis-nav-menu a {
padding: 1rem 3.4rem;

Could you please tell me what part of the css controls these two areas.

At about line 430 of your styles.css you have:

.site-container {
    background-color: #FFFFFF;
    border: 1px solid #E3E3E3;
    margin: 6rem auto;
    max-width: 1140px;

If you reduce the 6rem it will reduce the space above your page.

I don't fully understand part 2 of your question.
