    I moved my secondary nav menu to the top and when I did that, I now have a margin between the top of the page and the header (with the white space behind the menu).

    You can see the example here:

    Essentially, I want the background to reach the top of the page which should allow me to simply add more padding around the header. Whatever would work is fine, however.

    Look for following code in style.css file

    .menu-secondary {
    	-moz-border-radius: 5px;
    	-webkit-border-radius: 5px;
    	background-color: #090909;
    	border-radius: 5px;
    	margin: 0 0 10px;
    }

    Replace it with

    .menu-secondary {
    	-moz-border-radius: 5px;
    	-webkit-border-radius: 5px;
    	background-color: #090909;
    	border-radius: 5px;
    	margin:0px;
    }

    Davinder, that removed the gap between the menu and the header. The background behind the menu is still there, however.

    Add this to the bottom of your style.css

    #subnav{background:#090909}
