I'm new to using child theme in general. i work for a newspaper company and we are thinking of switching our websites to genesis. this is a simple question, but i cant find help on the internet, sorry. The question i have is if we edit the single.php file to embed a form, for mailchimp for example, what happens when studio press updates that theme?

The simple answer is that any changes you make to a child theme will be overwritten if you update the theme.

In your example, you will have to re-enter your code in single.php after updating the theme.

Studio Press rarely, if ever updates a child theme, and never are they auto-updated. Child theme functionality is derived from the Genesis Framework, which is updated regularly. You won't even know about child theme updates unless you log into your account and look at the downloads area.

If a child theme is updated, you have to determine if the update is worthwhile for you to incorporate or not. Updating a child theme means comparing and transferring code manually.
