Hi, I want to use the Mindstream theme for my site but want the header area to look like it does on the Expose Theme with the Primary Navigation at the very top (which would be the menu for my static pages like Home, Resources and Contact); the middle banner for my logo and background graphic; and then the Secondary Navigation, which would be the menu for all of the  Category pages.

The problem is that they've disabled the Primary and Secondary navigation bars and used a Custom Menu widget in the Header Right area for the existing top main navigation.  Can you tell me what I need to do to get my menus to look like the ones on the Expose theme - and left-aligned? This is my first attempt at designing a site in WordPress and using the Genesis framework.

    Hi,

You've inadvertently asked a complicated question.  Combining characteristics of different Genesis themes is tricky.  Each has its own special featues.  But I see the basic idea here.  Expose actually takes the Primary Navigation, and puts it above the Header instead of where it normally goes (below the Header)!  Whereas, as you said, Mindstream puts navigation up in the Header, and then applies fancy CSS to it to get that look.   So a whole lotta customizing going on, and this is kind of a shotgun wedding.  🙂

Here are instructions on how to move the Primary Navigation before the header, the very first thing on this page.  So you can try that.  And also, you'll need to specify a menu as the Primary Menu (Appearance... Menus... Theme Locations), or you won't see any menu even after making those changes. But I'm afraid that making that menu look just like Mindstream's may take some additional work, even if you get it nicely up there in the header.  But give it a try, and see how it looks.

    Good luck, Dave

Thanks Dave, but before the positioning part, how do I get the primary and secondary navigation to be enabled - to reappear. In the documentation for this theme, it says they are disabled, and when I check the Theme Settings, there are no check boxes for "Include Primary Navigation Menu" and "Include Secondary Navigation Menu".

Would it be easier to create 2 new Custom Menu widgets to create the Primary and Secondary Navigation in this theme (which I'd have to figure out how to do)?

Oh, shoot, they're disabled.... I don't have this particular theme, so I was going by the normal Genesis scenario!  So without being hands-on, I'm flying blind, and might steer you wrong, unfortunately.  I might suggest contacting official support... they would know quickly, unless someone who has the theme chimes in.  Sorry!
