Looking to create a minimalist style theme by removing unwanted folders, scripts, and widgets from the child theme.

As the theme will be for my personal use, is the language folder and associated .pot file non-essential? Is it required for any browser or google translate functions? Thanks.

It's required for translation functions if you're providing your site is available in multi-language. If that's the case, each language would have it's own .pot file.

.pot files are generated by Poedit from code embedded through out the theme.

Thanks for the quick response Victor.

I'm not intending to create a multi-lingual website or theme. I would therefore assume from your answer that the language file or folder is not needed for my purpose. Thanks again for your wisdom 🙂
