Hello All,
For the past few days I have been spending time on something that I should not have been spending time on. As an entrepreneur I have no reason to focus coding or anything related to that. But for the little work that I need done I feel as if some developers are charging a bit too much for such little modifications.
I ended up trying to figure it out only to find myself only to get a syntax error which led me to removing all of my files and not even having a back up. Now 3 months of work has been mowed down to a bar blog.
Here is what I was trying to do...
All I wanted to do is get my header to look something like this...

All I needed done was
1.Logo Centered
2.Menu Wrapped Around Logo as on the links above
3.Sticky Menu so that it would not move when visitors scroll
One individual wanted to charge me $120 for this quick little modification. I don't mind paying that price but I don't think these little modifications are going to take an hour + to do. I tried figuring this out (which was foolish from a business move) but its hard for a person who does not do this quite often to figure it out with just text.
If there were video training on this I would have easily figured this out.
***My website is bare because of the syntax errors and I did not have a backup so that's why its bare.***
Is $120 a fair price for 3 little modifications?

... as to whether it's a fair price or not, only you can make that call. Each of us place different values on their own time and skill set and that of others
$120 dollars to save you potentially losing 3 months work and the time it took you to do that?
Where I live, that's a decent meal out for 2 with wine and dessert, in other parts of the word it's a different story. Your call

Yea I understand where your coming from. But would you pay $120 for an oil change?
I know that's an obvious answer. But if that was the only oil change service in town for the next 100 miles we would both consider paying that price depending on the situation.

Sorry for placing this question in the wrong area. I did not realize the categories. But my next question if you don't mind helping is more on this subject matter.
I was able to get sub navigation centered but no matter what I try I cannot get my logo centered for the life of me.
I've tried to center the logo through CSS and that is not working. I'm to hesitant to touch the PHP because that's what caused me to lose the entire site.
Any tips? Thanks for the help if any!

$120 is cheap in my opinion as there's a fair amount of time needed to get 3 different modifications working on different screen sizes as well so i assume that quote included responsiveness?

It depends on the car, and the type of oil used. I can assure you that the oil change on my husband's car is more than $120 🙂
But, back to your original question:
Developers & Designers don't necessarily charge for the amount of time they spend working on a project - what may take them 10 minutes to do might have taken then 3 years to learn. It's the value they are providing to the project - how much time are you saving by outsourcing?

Took me 5 years to get to the stage where i can install Masonry and understand the options, hand code entire templates with custom fields, code custom meta boxes and install and configure options for Isotope.
Its a good question @movemaker.
The story of how much trouble you've caused yourself and how much time you've wasted trying to the job yourself proves the point that the developer's charge was fair.
I'm a designer, not a developer...and I've hired developers several times to help me through rough spots.
Am I always happy to pay the price for that? No.
Do I think it's worth it? Yes.
It's all part of the cost of doing business in the real world.

Most developers or coders you hire wil run a backup (or ask you to do it) before they start working.
So, that $120 was enough for you to have a backup whenever you should have decided (after hiring) to do it on your own.
It is just like what Susan said, and Picasso for that matter when he was asked to do a street portrait and charged a few thousands dollars for it after a few minutes of drawing: 'Lady, it took me 20 years to get this far'.I've seen more and more contributors to this forum changing from free advise to paid support.
And I think they stand in their right.Unless you want to become a Genesis Developer or Coder yourself, or you have tons of time to figure it out yourself, just accept the fact you will have to pay for someone else's expertise.
There is no such thing as a free beer.

I never mentioned wanting anything for free. Everything in life and business has a cost of either time or fiat currency. I'm willing to pay if the price is fair
