Looking at testing out Gutenberg using the plugin to prep for WP 5.0.

For this site (Japanese) we'd be better using the genesis framework on its own with Gutenberg & jetpack and not using a child theme.

Any thoughts? And I realize idea learnt to use with a child theme but worth the custom CSS in WordPress and jetpack + capabilities of Gutenberg might not need child themes as much?

No, no, no. Never, ever use the Genesis Framework by itself. The framework is updated on a regular basis. If you use it as the theme, every customization you make will be lost when the framework is updated. That's the entire reason you have to use a child theme. Jetpack and Gutenberg are not themes. They are plugins. The concept of parent/child relationship doesn't apply to them.

Just need the header and footer exactly how it is in the framework, Gutenberg will let us build the rest..

Use the Genesis Sample theme. In the past, some framework updates were made to remove some CSS and move it to child themes. You'll be making a big mistake using the framework without a child theme. It's not designed to be used that way.

Besides, you're placing way to much emphasis on Gutenberg. Gutenberg is not a website builder like you may find with Beaver Builder or Elementor. Have you even tried Gutenberg yet? It is a block editor interface that sits on top of TinyMCE. Unless you know how to create Guten-blocks, you are still going to need to add customizations through your child theme.

I've been deep diving into Gutenberg since V.1 and am developing a tutorial for creating your own Gutenblocks. I'm releasing the tutorial when Gutenberg is released in WordPress 5.0.

Very interested in your tutorial, Victor, based on your previous writings. Sounds great.
