Due to the server space that images consume, I need to host all of the images for my site on a separate server. How can I ensure that these images are available through the media library so that they can be used as the featured image on my genesis site (and therefore render on my homepage, category pages, etc. alongside the appropriate posts)? Any advice on this is most appreciated!

Ideally one would use cdn service (like maxcdn / cloudflare) to fix image overloading server issue. You can also try free Jetpack service http://jetpack.me/support/photon/ to show image on your site through wordpress.com servers.

Yes, I understand all that's been outlined in the article you referenced. However, that doesn't address the true question, which is -- how can I get images stored on an external server to work with genesis as the featured image for a post?
