    Hey everybody,

I've tried to customize my theme by editing mostly the CSS here and there. I made the content area more narrow, basic things like that.

Doing so has apparently thrown my website's responsiveness out the window. Why is that? And how do I maintain responsiveness when I make changes to the stylesheet?

You will need to check your site at different screen sizes and modify the CSS on the Media Queries section of your child themes style.css file.
