how to have hover effect only around menu link

Hi,

Maybe it's because I don't know what to search in English. But in my nav bar when I have a hover effect the color on my link goes from the bottom of my nav bar till the top. And I've already seen that somewhere and besides I've looked with firebug I couldn't figure out how it was done.
The result was that the hover only went around the nav link (the word) and not on the entire length of the nav bar.

Also you may have to adjust padding on the nav bar and margins on the links to make it fill the entire space instead of just highlighting the word
